TIA Watsessing Depot

Several urns on pedestals and planting boxes of pansies brightened up the rather grim architecture of the Watsessing Station of the Lackawanna Railroad on Moulter Place. Unfortunately, the property was allowed to deteriorate over the years and commuters using the RR complained of bitter cold waits on the platform, with no shelter available.

The railroad was originally built at street level and the station was a wooden board and batten structure in Victorian Style. The road was electrified and sunk below street level around 1912 and double tracked from Glenwood Avenue to Montclair. The magnificent terminal in Montclair, now converted into a shopping mall, was designed by architect William Hull Botsford who died in the Titanic disaster.
